2007
Lasermap is proud to announce the purchase of a brand new LiDAR system. The ALTM Gemini at 167 kHz from Optech, who was delivered in November, uses the Multipulse technology and help acquire digital elevation data faster then it's predecessors and with even more accuracy.
2003 a banner year for Lasermap
2003 was a banner year for Lasermap. After a great deal of research into all of the lidar systems available, based on its reputation for reliability, accuracy and flexibility, Lasermap decided to purchase a new Optech 2050 lidar system. This was delivered in February and has been used on Lasermap's projects since. The instrument includes the latest state-of-the-art features, including lidar intensity capture, to aid in the interpretation of features on the ground. The new lidar has increased the company's efficiency and accuracy significantly and allows us to be one of the most competitive service providers in the world.
Lasermap Asia
This year we're pleased to bring you greetings not only from our management, staff and associated partners at Lasermap and GPR Consultants in North America, but also from our new company staff in Malaysia. Lasermap Asia was inaugurated early this year under the management of Dr. Rejean Simard and Ms. Lee Cho Har who can be reached at our office in Kuala Lumpur (see the back of this newsletter for contact information).
Open pit mining surveys
This past summer Lasermap completed an extensive survey of a major open pit mine. These types of surveys present some additional challenges in flight planning: without proper flight line layout some parts of the pit surface could be in a "lidar shadow." Extra lines were flown to ensure complete coverage.
Landslide and erosion mapping
Lidar is also very applicable for landslide and erosion mapping. The company has conducted a couple of major programs in this field; one in Malaysia, and one closer to home in the Gaspé area of Québec, Canada. The latter is part of a multi-year program to monitor coastal erosion using remote sensing techniques.
County mapping
Many municipal governments utilize lidar data along with other remote sensing techniques to provide input information for regional planning. A lidar survey can provide a very detailed bare earth, digital terrain model. This allows engineering studies to be conducted to determine with unprecedented accuracy the effects of any construction on flooding and drainage, along with other environmental issues. In 2003, Lasermap conducted a county lidar survey as a sub contractor for a client in New York State. Many small (and not so small) development and engineering planning surveys have also been conducted this year from Texas to Pennsylvania and Alabama.
Power line and route location mapping
Lasermap conducts power line mapping projects every year, and this year was no different. Over the course of the year we did several route location and area mapping projects for three different utilities and several other route projects. Deliverables vary depending on the survey parameters but can include bare earth, vegetation cover and power line catenary surveys to be used to calculate maximum power loads and clearance to vegetation.
Large projects too!
Our new lidar system is ideal for larger projects too. For example, in 2003 we collected data for a project covering 3000 sq. kms. (almost 1200 square miles) divided into two blocks for a major Lasermap client.
